Free agent Hill headed to Suns

Grant Hill is leaving the Orlando Magic after seven injury-plagued years to join the Phoenix Suns, his agent said.

The 34-year-old forward agreed to a two-year deal worth about $1.8 million for the first year, with a second-year player option for about $2 million, agent Lon Babby said.

Clippers sign top draft pick Thornton

First-round draft pick Al Thornton signed a two-year, $3.5-million contract with the Clippers on Thursday, will play for their summer league team in Las Vegas next week and could slide into the rotation when training camp opens in October.

Said Thornton, a 6-foot-8 forward from Florida State who averaged 19.7 points and 7.2 rebounds as a senior last season and led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring: “I feel I can come in here and help them right away.”

Thornton will make $1.6 million next season.

Former USC standout Nick Young signed a two-year deal that will guarantee him nearly $3 million with the Washington Wizards. Young, a 6-foot-7 guard-forward, was the 16th overall pick in last week’s draft.

The Sacramento Kings signed first-round draft pick Spencer Hawes, a center from Washington. Hawes was chosen 10th overall in last week’s draft.

The Seattle SuperSonics introduced P.J. Carlesimo as coach, ending a two-month search.

HOCKEY

Ducks keep busy by signing Hnidy

The Ducks signed free-agent defenseman Shane Hnidy to a two-year contract that will pay him $755,000 this season and $760,000 in 2008-09.

Hnidy, 31, has spent the last two seasons with Atlanta and had five goals and seven assists in 72 games last season.

The team will also conduct its annual conditioning camp for its top prospects, which begins today at Anaheim Ice and runs through Thursday. Among those scheduled to participate are their top draft picks from the last three seasons: Bobby Ryan, Mark Mitera and Logan MacMillan.

Goalie Dominik Hasek, 42, agreed to terms of a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings that is worth more than $2 million in base salary.

The New York Islanders signed veteran forward Bill Guerin to a two-year contract. Guerin scored 36 goals last season while splitting time with St. Louis and San Jose.

U.S. falls again, 1-0, and finishes 0-3

Jaime Castrillon’s 14th-minute header lifted Colombia to a 1-0 victory over the United States in the Copa America tournament in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

The United States, which finished 0-3 in the tournament, has lost three in a row for the first time since World Cup qualifiers against Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica from July to September 2001.

In the second game, Argentina defeated Paraguay, 1-0, on a 78th-minute goal by Javier Maschera.

In the quarterfinals, Uruguay plays Venezuela on Saturday and Chile meets Brazil. On Sunday, Mexico faces Paraguay and Argentina plays Peru.

Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein (Los Alamitos High, UCLA) was voted into the MLS All-Star game. Bornstein, last year’s MLS rookie of the year, was the only player from either L.A. team to make the squad.

This year’s game puts the MLS All-Stars against Celtic FC of the Scottish Premier League. The game will be at Commerce City, Colo., on July 19.

The State Department expressed concern after two security agents traveling with the U.S. soccer team were stopped at a Venezuelan airport, temporarily stripped of their weapons and threatened with arrest.

Outgoing U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield told Venezuelan TV on Wednesday that two State Department security agents had the proper permit to carry handguns when they arrived in the western city of Maracaibo ahead of the team’s June 28 opening match in the Copa America tournament.

No charges will be filed against Johnson

Former Chicago Bears tackle Tank Johnson will not face charges connected to his arrest in Gilbert, Ariz., on suspicion of drunk driving. Police said the case would be closed with no request for prosecution.

Laguna Hills gymnast on Pan American team

Ivana Hong, a 14-year-old from Laguna Hills, was one of six U.S. women selected for the U.S. Pan American Games gymnastics team.

The team will compete in Rio de Janeiro on July 14-17.

Nastia Liukin is making her second Pan Am Games appearance. She is also a two-time U.S. all-around champion though she has been struggling with a right ankle injury and will probably compete only on uneven bars and balance beam in Rio de Janeiro.

The Atlanta Falcons signed receiver Noriaki Kinoshita, a native of Osaka, Japan, who played the last three years with the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europa. Kinoshita is the second player from Japan to sign with the Falcons. The first, tight end Nachi Abe, lasted 10 days in the 2000 preseason.

Former Florida and Bethune-Cookman football player Avery Atkins, 20, was found dead in his car in the garage of his aunt’s home in Port Orange, Fla., in what police called a suspicious death.

DeMarre Carroll, nephew of Missouri basketball Coach Mike Anderson, was shot in the ankle early Thursday during a disturbance outside a Columbia, Mo., nightclub. Carroll, a 20-year-old junior forward who transferred to Missouri from Vanderbilt, was treated and released from a hospital.
