Rogers can’t contain Johjima and loses

Kenji Johjima hit a game-breaking grand slam off Kenny Rogers, and Miguel Batista held the highest scoring team in the major leagues to one run in six innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-4, on Saturday night.

Johjima’s second career slam came in the sixth after he fouled off four of Rogers’ pitches during an eight-pitch at-bat.

Rogers’ final pitch of the game was a hanging, 76-mph curveball that Johjima sent into Seattle’s bullpen beyond left-center field to blow open a 2-1 game and send the Tigers to their second loss in eight games.

Rogers (3-1) yielded five hits and five earned runs for his first defeat since Oct. 1, when he gave up two runs in a two-inning start while preparing for the postseason -- in which he went 3-0 and threw 23 scoreless innings.

The 42-year-old sat out the first 11 weeks of the season because of surgery to remove a blood clot in his pitching shoulder but had yielded only two earned runs while winning his first three starts.

Batista (9-7) gave up five hits, struck out six and walked two to help Seattle win for the fifth time in six games. He has given up only seven earned runs in his last five starts.

All-Star J.J. Putz entered and got the last four outs -- striking out the side in the ninth -- for his 26th save. He hasn’t blown one in 28 chances dating to Sept. 30, a Mariners record.
