Devil Rays pound Mussina, Yankees

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays had plenty to cheer about Friday night after routing the New York Yankees, 14-4, including Edwin Jackson’s first road win since 2003, B.J. Upton’s two home runs and Dioner Navarro’s second homer of the season, a grand slam.

“I think all three as they get more experience in this league are going to be high-end baseball players here,” Devil Rays Manager Joe Maddon said.

“When you get young guys like that there’s going to be problems. There’s always some growing pains involved and I think all of them showed you tonight what they’re capable of doing.”

Upton had three hits and three RBIs in his first career multi-homer game and Tampa Bay beat Mike Mussina for the first time in eight starts at Yankee Stadium.

The Devil Rays sent 10 batters to the plate during a five-run fifth, chasing Mussina, who was 7-0 with a 1.07 earned-run average in seven starts against the Devil Rays in the Bronx.

Jackson (2-9) yielded four singles and four walks over six shutout innings in his best start of the season. He struck out four to win for the first time since June 24.

“Once I got past the first couple innings, I was just making them put the ball in play,” he said.

It was his first road victory since winning at San Francisco on Sept. 27, 2003, while with the Dodgers. His road winless streak of 14 starts and 26 games was the longest among current major league starters.
