Former Capistrano Unified School District Supt. James Fleming, who has been indicted for allegedly creating “enemies” lists of critics, has asked the district to pay his legal fees, officials announced Monday.

During an Orange County Grand Jury investigation of various district controversies in September, the school board voted to pay for his legal fees but rescinded the decision in March. In a July 9 letter to acting Supt. Suzette Lovely, Fleming requested that the matter be revisited.

Capistrano Unified School District: A news brief in some editions of Tuesday’s California section cited district officials as the source of an announcement about former Capistrano Unified School District Supt. James Fleming’s request that the district pay his legal fees. The information should have been attributed to a letter Fleming wrote to district officials.

Fleming was charged in May with felony counts of misappropriating public funds, using public funds to influence an election and conspiracy.
