Free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper will work out for the Oakland Raiders today, two weeks after being released by the Miami Dolphins.

Culpepper held a private workout for a member of the Raiders’ personnel department in Florida on Monday. The 30-year-old quarterback did well enough there to persuade the team to fly him out to California for an additional workout.

“Any time that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, we’re going to do it,” Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin said. “Obviously Daunte is something that we’ve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow.”

St. Louis Rams cornerback Fakhir Brown said he was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy because he accidentally missed a drug test and is appealing the penalty.

Brown was suspended earlier this month for the first four games of the season. Brown said he missed the test because he was “out of town and things just got mixed up.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Bruce Allen disputed a report that quarterback Chris Simms has a sore arm and may wind up being put on injured reserve.

Simms had surgery last September to remove his spleen and has struggled to regain his passing touch. He’s competing in training camp with two other quarterbacks for the backup job behind starter Jeff Garcia.

The St. Petersburg Times reported on its website that the 26-year-old quarterback, who has been limited in practice the last few days, may be a candidate for injured reserve.
