Less than 24 hours after Tiger Woods finished second at the U.S. Open on Father’s Day, his wife gave birth to a daughter. He announced Monday night on his website that Sam Alexis Woods was born early Monday.

“Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully,” Woods wrote. “We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy.”

Woods said he would miss a major if it meant seeing the birth of his child. Now he won’t have to, but it’s not clear how his upcoming schedule will be affected.

He’s scheduled to host a tournament in Washington from July 5-8. The British Open starts July 19, and the PGA Championship begins Aug. 9 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Phil Mickelson withdrew from this week’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., because of his injured left wrist, a spokesman for his management company said.

Mickelson injured his wrist while chipping from rough at the Oakmont Country Club during Memorial Day weekend. He has been told not to play golf for at least two weeks, according to spokesman T.R. Reinman, who said he wasn’t sure when Mickelson would play next.

“He’ll continue his therapy. He’ll continue to be monitored by his specialist, and there will be a determination after that,” he said.

Mickelson failed to make the cut at the U.S. Open, ending a streak of 30 consecutive majors in which he made the cut.

The inflammation hurt so badly that he didn’t play a full practice round before teeing off Thursday.

NBC’s final-round coverage of the U.S. Open earned a 7.0 overnight rating with a 17 share, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was the best overnight rating for an Open final round since Woods’ 2002 victory at Bethpage, which got a 9.3/21.

The rating for Sunday’s final round peaked at an 11.1/23 from 4-4:30 p.m. as winner Angel Cabrera waited for Woods and Jim Furyk to finish their rounds.

The overnight average for the Los Angeles market was a 5.6/14. The Pittsburgh market, site of the tournament, got the nation’s highest numbers, a 14.2/33.

Final national ratings were not available Monday.
