Rookie’s hit in 13th lifts Giants over Yankees

Rookie Nate Schierholtz ended San Francisco’s season-long eight-game losing streak with a two-out run-scoring single in the 13th inning, giving the Giants a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday.

The Giants had to rally from an early three-run deficit and overcome Alex Rodriguez’s score-tying home run in the ninth inning against Brad Hennessey before getting their first victory since June 12.

Ryan Klesko started the winning rally with a single to right field against Scott Proctor (1-4) and moved to second base on Bengie Molina’s sacrifice. With two out, Omar Vizquel reached on an infield single to bring up Schierholtz, who blooped a single that dropped in front of center fielder Melky Cabrera.

“It’s been tough,” Schierholtz said. “I got here just a couple of weeks ago. We won our first couple of games and then went on a slide. It’s definitely a big win. Hopefully, things will start to turn around.”

The Yankees had a chance to win it in the 11th when they loaded the bases with one out against Steve Kline. But Hideki Matsui struck out on three pitches and Robinson Cano grounded out.

That helped the Giants hand the Yankees their fourth loss in five games and overcome another big game from Rodriguez, who hit his major league-leading 28th home run and had four hits for the second consecutive game.

Barry Bonds gave the Giants a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning when he walked with the bases loaded against Brian Bruney. Bonds remained at 749 home runs -- six shy of tying Hank Aaron’s record of 755.

Pedro Feliz drew the Giants to within one run with a home run -- the first given up by Chien-Ming Wang this season to a right-handed hitter.
