Livingston set for Tuesday surgery

Times Staff Writer

Point guard Shaun Livingston is scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee Tuesday in Alabama.

Orthopedic surgeon James Andrews will perform the procedure to repair three of the four key ligaments -- anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, and medial collateral -- a dislocated knee and torn cartilage Livingston suffered when he landed awkwardly Feb. 26 in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats at Staples Center.

Livingston, 21, might miss the 2007-08 season. The fourth overall pick in the 2004 draft, Livingston sat out 39 games in his rookie season because of a serious injury to his right knee, and he has been sidelined often in three NBA seasons.

Because of the severity of Livingston’s latest knee injury, which is uncommon in basketball, team physician Tony Daly consulted with colleagues from across the nation before making his recommendation to Livingston. Daly considered recommending multiple surgeries to complete the repairs, but the plan is to finish the work in one session.

Although Livingston came under criticism for his performance this season as the Clippers struggled, he had his best season statistically, averaging 9.3 points and 5.1 assists in 54 games. Livingston is guaranteed $4.4 million next season.
