Gang shootout causes crash that kills woman
A 67-year-old woman driving in a residential neighborhood in Pico Rivera was killed Tuesday evening when a gang shootout caused another car to crash into her vehicle, officials said.
Her daughter, who also was in the car, sustained minor injuries.
The victim was Marlene Johnson of Pico Rivera, said Capt. Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
About 7:30 p.m., Johnson was driving a minivan on San Gabriel Place with her daughter, 47, whose name was not disclosed, as the shootout was occurring between the occupants of two other vehicles that were traveling north on San Gabriel Place.
The 24-year-old driver of a black sport utility vehicle was shot in the torso and careened into Johnson’s minivan. He was apparently shot by someone in a dark Toyota that contained four men, which sped away on Verner Street after the shooting.
Johnson was taken to Beverly Hospital in Montebello, where she died at 8:21 p.m., Winter said.
The SUV driver was not identified. On Wednesday, he was clinging to life at an unidentified hospital, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Oscar Butao said.
