On a day when all the top-seeded NCAA women’s teams won by at least 37 points, here were the sidelights:

In doubt? Wear emerald

* The same old trick can work when your team is young, as Tulyah Gaines, above, now knows. Notre Dame brought out the green uniforms for the first time all season, and the ninth-seeded Irish beat No. 8 California, 62-59.

An Olympic challenge

* North Carolina State Coach Kay Yow, on her third recurrence of breast cancer after being diagnosed about 20 years ago, won her first NCAA tournament game in six seasons. Her reward? A matchup against 2005 champion Baylor, coached by Kim Mulkey, who played on the 1984 U.S. Olympic team on which Yow was an assistant coach.

Job market is tough

* Coach June Daugherty, whose Washington team edged out USC for an NCAA berth, lasted one tournament game before she was out of a job. One day after a 79-60 loss to Iowa State, the school fired her. By that measure, Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, a former WNBA and USC star, is a survivor. After a 10-game losing streak early in the season, she coached Prairie View A&M; to the NCAA tournament, but nothing could save the Panthers from a 57-point, first-round loss to North Carolina.

* Dallas Regional: No. 4 Texas A&M; (25-6) vs. No. 5 George Washington (27-3), 5 p.m. -- Texas A&M;, unbeaten in two games against Oklahoma and touted 6-foot-3 center Courtney Paris, hopes to enjoy similar success against George Washington and similarly imposing Jessica Adair.

* Greensboro Regional: No. 3 Arizona State (29-4) vs. No. 6 Louisville (27-7), 7:30 p.m. -- Arizona State has lost only to Stanford (three times) and Tennessee, but nobody on its roster is as talented as Angel McCoughtry, Louisville’s Big East Conference player of the year.
