Times’ Plaschke receives APSE columnist honor
For the second time in three years, The Times’ Bill Plaschke has been honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors as the best sports columnist for newspapers with more than 250,000 in circulation.
The APSE announced its 2006 winners Thursday.
Plaschke also won in 1999 and 2004 and has placed in the top 10 in seven of the last eight years in annual judging conducted by sports editors.
Michael Hiltzik of The Times finished tied for fourth in investigative reporting, a category including all sports sections regardless of circulation, for his series on anti-doping agencies.
Scott Reid, Robert Kuwada and Tony Saavedra of the Orange County Register finished first in investigative reporting.
Times sports reporters receiving honorable mentions were Diane Pucin for breaking news, Mike Bresnahan and Chris Dufresne for game stories and Lonnie White and Gary Klein for project reporting.
It was announced previously that The Times’ sports section was a Triple Crown winner, finishing among the top 10 in its circulation group for daily, Sunday and special sections.
