A Washington Preparatory High School senior was fatally stabbed on campus Friday afternoon, authorities said, and the search continues for two suspects.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies did not release the name of the victim, a 17-year-old boy.

The suspects are boys ages 16 to 17, Sheriff’s Deputy Dana Camarillo said.

Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. David Brewer arrived on the campus shortly after the incident and before learning of the student’s death.

“The bottom line is I’m here to support the school,” he said.

The victim appeared to have been stabbed with a knife during a fight outside a gymnasium about 3 p.m., Camarillo said.

“It’s symptomatic of the violence we have in the city,” Brewer said of the crime.

“From all indications it was gang-related.

“We just have to come together as a community to help solve this problem.”

Brewer said crisis counselors and extra police would be on campus Monday.

Washington Preparatory has no stationary metal detectors. Instead, Brewer said, officials “do random checks of students throughout the day, and any weapons found are confiscated.”
