* Houston 106, at Utah 95: Tracy McGrady scored 47 points to lead the Rockets past the team that ousted them from the first round of the playoffs last season. With Yao Ming in foul trouble and Utah leading by 12 points after the first quarter, McGrady took over, making 17 of 27 shots and 11 of 14 free throws. The Rockets also forced 20 turnovers while committing only 12. Carlos Boozer had 30 points and 16 rebounds for Utah.

* Detroit 91, at Miami 80: Tayshaun Prince scored a career-high 34 points, matched a career best with 12 rebounds and the Pistons pulled away with a 12-0 fourth-quarter run while playing without leading scorer Richard Hamilton (family matter). The Heat, playing without Dwyane Wade (knee and shoulder surgeries), got only nine points and seven rebounds from Shaquille O’Neal, who went scoreless in the first half.

* Phoenix 106, at Seattle 99: Amare Stoudemire had 23 points and 11 rebounds and the Suns overcame a nine-point third-quarter deficit in the home opener of the SuperSonics’ most awkward season. Grant Hill had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in his Suns’ debut. Seattle rookie Kevin Durant had 27 points amid crowd chants of “save our Sonics” in reference to the team’s bid to relocate to Oklahoma City.
