The 3-D frenzy that gripped moviegoers in the early 1950s roped in even John Wayne, who starred in the classic 1953 western “Hondo.” Wayne (pictured) plays a U.S. Cavalry dispatch rider who must protect a female rancher (Geraldine Page in her Oscar-nominated film debut) and her young son (Lee Aaker) from an attack by Apaches. On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ tech council will present the restored “Hondo” in digital 3-D at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater; Leonard Maltin hosts a panel about the film’s restoration. . . . Also at the academy: Three titans of comedy writing -- Larry Gelbart, James L. Brooks and Judd Apatow -- will discuss the business of funny Friday at the Goldwyn ( www.oscars.org). . . . John Travolta is scheduled to appear at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre Wednesday to discuss his latest film musical, “Hairspray,” for which he’s received warm notices as the sweet, weight-challenged Edna Turnblad ( www.americancinematheque.com). . . . The 85th anniversary celebration of the Egyptian Theatre continues with a Wednesday screening of the second film to ever play the venerable movie palace, “The Covered Wagon,” the 1923 James Cruze-directed epic about the expansion of the Wild West ( www.egyptiantheatre.com).
