This week at latimes.com/books:

In Paperback Writers, Richard Rayner discovers an unexpected aesthetic sympathy between the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who died in 1973 at the age of 69, and the Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. “The two,” Rayner suggests, “resemble each other in interesting ways: both world writers, both prodigiously prolific and immensely popular, both looking to American writers for their early inspiration, both translators themselves and the beneficiaries of brilliant and devoted other translators who have delivered their work into English.”
