Nevada defeats UC Irvine

JaVale McGee scored 20 points and Brandon Fields had 16 to lead Nevada to a 77-68 victory over UC Irvine at home Tuesday night.

Demarshay Johnson and Marcelus Kemp scored 12 points apiece as Nevada (1-1) held a 43-20 edge in rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end.

Kevin Bland led UC Irvine (1-1) with 17 points on seven-for-14 shooting. Adam Rodenberg and Patrick Sanders had 11 points each.

Bland attempted to rally Irvine with 15 of his 17 points in the second half, making two free throws with 2:15 left to pull the Anteaters within 10 at 73-63.

Chad DeCasas made one of two free throws on Irvine’s next possession to cut the lead to nine, but that was as close as the Anteaters got.

Montana State 74, Long Beach State 56 -- Casey Durham scored 19 points to help lead the Bobcats at Bozeman, Mont. The 49ers led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Montana State (1-1) took the lead with 17:09 to play.

Donovan Morris led Long Beach (0-2) with 14 points. The only other 49ers player to reach double figures was Brian Freeman with 10 points.
