Pepperdine holds off Long Beach in overtime

Tyrone Shelley scored 25 points, including a game-cinching three-point basket, and Malcolm Thomas had 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead Pepperdine to a 92-81 overtime victory over Long Beach State on Wednesday night at Malibu.

Shelly’s three-point basket with a minute left gave the Waves a seven-point lead.

He finished with nine rebounds and four steals. Mychel Thompson scored all 14 of his points in the second half for Pepperdine (1-4), which never trailed in the overtime after jumping out on a 5-0 spurt.

Greg Plater led Long Beach (1-3) with 21 points. He also had six assists.

Donovan Morris and Artis Gant each scored 13 points for the 49ers.

During regulation, Thomas converted a three-point play and Pepperdine took a 57-56 lead with 8:31 left -- its first advantage since the opening minutes of the game. The lead would change hands three times until overtime.

Cal State Northridge 92, Cal State Bakersfield 76 -- Tremaine Townsend and Rodrigue Mels each scored 16 points to lead the host Matadors to victory.

Jonathan Heard scored 13 points and Calvin Chitwood and Josh Jenkins added 11 points apiece for Northridge (3-0).

Terrence Johns scored 25 points to lead Bakersfield (1-4). Zack Gramick added 15 points and Santwon Latunde scored nine of his 13 in the first half for the Roadrunners.

Rob Haynes scored nine of his 13 points in a decisive 19-8 first-half run, putting Bakersfield down, 35-20, with 8 minutes 41 seconds remaining.

The Roadrunners, playing their first Division I season, never got closer than nine points.
