LOOKING AHEAD

If the Lakers had bigger concerns before the season, their opening schedule -- with 11 of 16 games in November against playoff teams -- looked like another problem for a team desperately in need of a good start.

Guesses ran in the 4-12 range. Now 7-5 going into the last four -- with the next three at Staples Center starting with tonight’s game against New Jersey qualifies as a good start.

Not that December looks a lot easier.

Seven of the Lakers’ first 11 games are on the road before they close the year with home games against the Suns, Jazz and Celtics.

The schedule then eases up slightly -- until they go into the All-Star break with a two-week, nine-game East Coast trip.

Then the schedule turns in the Lakers’ favor, with 17 of their last 30 games at home.

All they have to do is get that far.
