Knee surgery for Stoudemire

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire will undergo minor arthroscopic knee surgery today and is expected to be sidelined only two to three weeks.

The operation to remove a loose particle will be on the All-Star’s right knee, not the left on which microfracture surgery was done two years ago. That operation forced him to sit out virtually all of the 2005-06 season.

“It’s a procedure that Raja [Bell] just went through just to clean it up,” Suns Coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We have time to do it, so we thought, let’s go ahead and get it done.”

There was no mention of the impending surgery, by Stoudemire or anyone else, during the team’s media day gathering Monday. The plans were revealed in a news release issued by the team Monday evening.

Stoudemire was named first team all-NBA last season after averaging 20.4 points and 9.6 rebounds.

A jury indicated that it believes New York Knicks Coach Isiah Thomas committed sexual harassment against a former team executive.

There was no official verdict, but the wording of a note to the judge by jurors makes it clear they have reached decisions on the key points of the $10-million lawsuit that has turned into a public relations disaster for the franchise.

Jurors reached a decision on eight of nine questions on the jury form. They were deadlocked on the one question, which asks whether Thomas should pay punitive damages.

That question becomes relevant only if the jury of four women and three men first determines Thomas committed harassment against Anucha Browne Sanders.

The judge sent the jury home for the day, asking the panel to deliberate today on the deadlocked question.

The Houston Rockets signed Dikembe Mutombo to a one-year contract, extending the 41-year-old center’s NBA career into a 16th season.

“I’m going to enjoy every second and every minute of my last year in the NBA,” he said. “I hope my farewell tour will be a nice, memorable one.”

The New Orleans Hornets signed free agents Ryan Bowen, Eric Chenowith, Trey Johnson and Anthony Richardson, bringing their training camp roster to 17.

Indiana Pacers forward Shawne Williams was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service for driving without a license after an Indianapolis judge suspended a possible 60-day jail sentence.

Williams pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge in Marion County Superior Court. He was also fined $400 and ordered to pay $160 in court costs.

The Golden State Warriors signed guard Tierre Brown and forwards Pat Burke and Carlos Powell.

Brown hasn’t played in the NBA since appearing in 76 games with the Lakers during the 2004-05 season.

Guard Darrell Armstrong was waived by the Indiana Pacers.

The 39-year-old Armstrong was the third-oldest player in the NBA last season.
