* at Chicago 4, Detroit 3: The Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane, the first overall pick in this year’s NHL draft, scored the only goal in the shootout. Kane got his first career point with an assist in regulation.

* Vancouver 4, at Calgary 3: Mattias Ohlund scored his second goal of the game with five seconds left in overtime for the Canucks.

* at Ottawa 2, New York Rangers 0: Martin Gerber stopped 35 shots for his eighth career shutout and Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Rangers left wing Sean Avery left because of a shoulder injury after a hit by Senators right wing Chris Neil 7:23 into the game.

* Boston 3, at Phoenix 1: Patrice Bergeron and Chuck Kobasew scored 38 seconds apart in the first period.

* New Jersey 4, at Florida 1: John Madden scored twice for the Devils, giving Brent Sutter his first NHL coaching victory. The Devils are opening the season with nine consecutive road games while construction wraps up on their new arena in Newark.

* at New York Islanders 3, Buffalo 2: Mike Comrie scored two goals for the second straight night, and the Islanders completed a sweep of the season-opening, home-and-home series against the Sabres.

* at Washington 2, Carolina 0: Alex Ovechkin flicked in the game’s first goal for his 200th NHL point in the Capitals’ home opener. The Capitals improved to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2002 -- the last time they reached the postseason.

* at Toronto 4, Montreal 3: Tomas Kaberle scored 3:26 into overtime to cap the Maple Leafs’ rally.
