Texas’ Charles runs all over Nebraska

Texas nearly got caught trying to outsmart Nebraska, but the Longhorns figured things out and pulled off a 28-25 victory when Jamaal Charles ran for 213 of his career-high 290 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter Saturday at Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns passed 30 times and ran 26 in the first three quarters, even though Nebraska entered the game ranked No. 115 out of 119 teams against the run.

Texas trailed, 17-9, entering the fourth -- but had 18 running plays and three pass plays while gaining 274 of its 545 total yards in the final period. Touchdown runs of 25, 86 and 40 yards by Charles were among them.

“It took us that long to figure out what was going to work,” quarterback Colt McCoy said.

Charles’ total was the fourth most in Texas history and his fourth-quarter total was nine yards short of the NCAA record for yards in a quarter set by Corey Dillon of Washington in 1996.

“It was my time to show everyone what I can do,” said Charles, who has 1,012 and 11 touchdowns this season.

Texas improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska is 4-5 and 1-4.

Mack Brown won his 100th game as the Longhorns’ coach.
