* Houston 6, at Chicago 1: Hunter Pence homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, and the Astros won for the third time in four games under interim manager Cecil Cooper. Pence hit a three-run shot in the fourth and two-run drive in the sixth. The Cubs acquired right-hander Steve Trachsel from the Baltimore Orioles. He was drafted by the Cubs in 1991 and pitched for them from 1993 to ’99.

* Philadelphia 9, at Florida 2: Kyle Kendrick took a fastball off his right arm trying to bunt in the second inning, but he still pitched seven innings and helped the Phillies extend their winning streak to a season-best six games.

* at St. Louis 8, Cincinnati 5: Rick Ankiel’s go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning, and Yadier Molina’s two-run homer powered the Cardinals past the Reds. Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion was taken to a hospital for a CT scan after being struck on the left eye by a foul ball while waiting in the on-deck circle in the sixth inning.

* San Francisco 3, at Washington 2: Kevin Correia, making his third start since being moved into the rotation, yielded two runs over six innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA since coming out of the bullpen.

* New York 7, at Atlanta 1: Carlos Delgado hit a three-run homer and John Maine gave up only three hits, helping the East Division-leading Mets end a five-game losing streak.

* at Milwaukee 3, Pittsburgh 2: Rookie Yovani Gallardo pitched seven sharp innings and hit his second homer of the season to lead the Brewers.

* Colorado 7, at Arizona 3 (10 innings): Cory Sullivan hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, then scored the go-ahead run on a 10th-inning error as the Rockies dropped the Diamondbacks out of first place in the West Division.

* at San Diego 6, Dodgers 4: After giving up three runs in the first inning, David Wells retired 13 of his last 15 batters, yielding only two more singles.
