* at Arizona 9, San Diego 6: Pitching on three days’ rest, Padres ace Jake Peavy gave up eight runs and the Diamondbacks took a one-game lead over San Diego in the NL West. The eight earned runs matched a career high for Peavy, who lasted only four innings, his shortest start since July 21, 2006.

* San Francisco 5, at Colorado 3: Barry Bonds hit his 762nd home run to back Kevin Correia. Colorado lost for only the second time in seven games.

* Pittsburgh 8, at St. Louis 2: In his first outing in more than a year, Mark Mulder (0-1) lasted four innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. Rick Ankiel hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, his seventh in 75 at-bats. It gave him 22 RBIs in 22 games since the former pitcher returned to the major leagues as an outfielder on Aug. 9.

* at Washington 6, Florida 4: Wily Mo Pena singled off Matt Lindstrom (2-4) to break a tie in the seventh. The Nationals have won five in a row.

* at Milwaukee 14, Houston 2: Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart each hit a three-run homer and the Brewers connected five times in all. Yovani Gallardo (7-4) pitched seven shutout innings and Milwaukee won for the fifth time in six games.

* at Cincinnati 7, New York 0: Right-hander Tom Shearn (2-0), a 30-year-old rookie, gave up only three hits in six innings to a Mets lineup missing five of its regulars.

* at Atlanta 9, Philadelphia 8: Despite a stunning rally with two outs in the ninth, the Braves remain 7 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Phillies remained five games back in second place.

* at Chicago 8, Dodgers 2: Ted Lilly got his first win in nearly a month and Aramis Ramirez homered to keep the Cubs a half game ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central.
