* at Kansas City 6, Minnesota 3: The Royals recorded their 63rd victory, guaranteeing that for the first time in four seasons they will not lose 100 games. In between seven-game losing streaks in May and September, they went 43-40. David DeJesus hit an RBI triple in the second inning and a two-run homer in the sixth, giving him a career-best 57 RBIs for the season.

* at Detroit 5, Texas 1: Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run home run and Gary Sheffield hit a two-run shot to lead the Tigers, who have won seven of nine to stay in the playoff race, trailing wild-card leader New York by four games and Cleveland by 5 1/2 in the Central Division. “I don’t want to mislead anybody like some school kid trying to be overly optimistic, but we’ve got a shot,” Manager Jim Leyland said.

* at Chicago 7, Cleveland 4: Jim Thome hit his 499th homer and drove in three runs to lead the White Sox. Chicago, already eliminated from playoff contention, ended a three-game skid and ended Central Division-leading Cleveland’s four-game winning streak.

* at Boston 5, Tampa Bay 4: David Ortiz hit his second homer of the game, a two-run drive that barely cleared the low right-field wall in the ninth inning. Ortiz drove in all five runs as the Red Sox held on to their five-game edge over the Yankees in the East Division. After hitting a three-run shot in the third inning, Ortiz hit his 31st homer with one out to win it.

* at Seattle 6, Oakland 5: Yuniesky Betancourt singled to right with two out in the ninth inning to drive in pinch-runner Charlton Jimerson with the winning run. The Mariners announced that first baseman Richie Sexson, who has sat out nine of the last 11 games, has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his left hamstring and will probably be out for another 10 days.

* New York 4, at Toronto 1: Mike Mussina pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning in his return to the rotation. The Blue Jays announced that third baseman Troy Glaus will undergo season-ending surgery next week to repair a nerve in his left foot.

* Angels 18, at Baltimore 6: The Angels, who tied a season high for runs, have outscored the Orioles, 28-11, in the first two games of the three-game series.
