* at Toronto 4, Boston 3: Once baseball’s best closer, Eric Gagne (3-2) gave up three eighth-inning runs -- two of them on a double by Russ Adams -- as the Red Sox lost their third in a row and watched their lead atop the AL East slip to 2 1/2 games. Gagne has blown four saves since joining Boston from Texas in a July 31 trade. All four games have ended as Red Sox losses.

* at Cleveland 7, Detroit 4: Travis Hafner hit a three-run homer to help the Indians increase their lead to 6 1/2 games over the Tigers in the AL Central while improving to 19-5 since Aug. 25. Cleveland’s 41st come-from-behind win dropped its magic number to five for clinching the division title.

* Seattle 8, at Oakland 7: Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam and doubled in a run to help Jeff Weaver (7-12) end a four-start winless stretch. Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 11 games with the first of three doubles that Seattle hit to start the game against Chad Gaudin. Suzuki also drove in two runs.

* at Minnesota 4, Texas 2: Torii Hunter drove in two runs to set his career high for a season (103), and the Twins took advantage of three errors -- two in the pivotal third inning -- by Rangers shortstop Michael Young. A ninth-inning error cost Texas Monday’s series opener.

* at Kansas City 3, Chicago 2: Gil Meche scattered four hits over seven innings and Billy Butler drove in two runs for the Royals. After a three-run first, the Royals went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. The White Sox, however, were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

* at New York 12, Baltimore 0: Melky Cabrera and Hideki Matsui drove in three runs apiece in the Yankees’ victory. Derek Jeter had three hits.

* at Angels 2, Tampa Bay 1: The Devil Rays’ Jason Hammel (2-5) fell to 1-11 in 21 major league starts despite a 2.35 earned-run average in his last four outings.
