Steve Flesch shot a seven-under-par 65 Friday to take sole possession of the lead after two rounds of the inaugural Turning Stone Resort Championship at Verona, N.Y.

Flesch, who began the day one shot off the lead, was at 13-under 131, one stroke ahead of first-round co-leader Jeff Gove (67) and Brendon de Jonge, who carded his second consecutive 66. Charles Warren (65) was alone in fourth at 11 under.

Rookie Matt Hendrix had his second straight 67 and was tied for fifth at 10 under with Chris Stroud (65) and Charley Hoffman.

With conditions again ideal on a hazy, humid day with temperatures in the 80s and a slight breeze, Flesch started at No. 10 and quickly built on his opening 66, making four birdies and an eagle for a record 30 on the back side of the 7,482-yard Atunyote Golf Club course.

“I’ve always said my iron game is the strength of my game, and when you give us generous fairways like this, if I get the ball on the fairway, I usually can find the pins with my irons,” said Flesch, who has hit 34 of 36 greens in regulation. “I just keep giving myself birdie putt after birdie putt. And if I get that putter going, I’ll make some birdies.”

The cut was at four-under 140, the second-lowest on the PGA Tour this year.

Mark Wiebe made a good impression in his first round as a member of the Champions Tour at the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.

Wiebe shot a seven-under 65 to share the first-round lead with another unlikely leader, Champions Tour Q School medalist Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand, as the players took advantage of a course softened by much-needed rain. Dana Quigley trailed the leaders by one stroke.

The rain allowed players to play aggressively. That showed as the field scoring average on the day (71.359) was the lowest opening-round average in the event’s seven-year history.
