* Pittsburgh 12, at Atlanta 11 (12): Xavier Nady hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the 12th inning, and the Pirates overcame a horrific ninth to ruin Atlanta’s home opener. The Braves took advantage of four walks to erase the Pirates’ 9-4 ninth-inning lead. But Nady, who led off the eighth with a homer, lined a 2-and-0 pitch from Blaine Boyer into the right-field seats with two out and two aboard in the 12th.

* Milwaukee 4, at Chicago 3 (10): Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning for the Brewers. Pinch-hitter Craig Counsell opened the 10th with a double off Bob Howry and moved up on a sacrifice. After Rickie Weeks was hit by a pitch, Gwynn delivered the go-ahead fly. Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano was forced out of the game in the seventh because of a forearm cramp.

* Washington 11, at Philadelphia 6: Nick Johnson’s tiebreaking RBI double off Tom Gordon highlighted a five-run ninth inning for the Nationals. Reigning NL MVP Jimmy Rollins hit a tying, two-run homer in the seventh, but the Phillies’ bullpen blew it.

* Arizona 4, at Cincinnati 2: Brandon Webb pitched six strong innings and the Diamondbacks hit three solo homers to dampen Dusty Baker’s debut as the Reds’ manager. Chris Young and Eric Byrnes homered off Aaron Harang, and Jeff Salazar hit a pinch-hit homer off Jared Burton.

* at San Diego 4, Houston 0: Jake Peavy hit an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, and pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to lead the Padres. Houston’s Roy Oswalt gave up three runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

* New York 7, at Florida 2: Johan Santana struck out eight in seven dominant innings and David Wright hit a three-run double for the Mets.

* Colorado at St. Louis, ppd., rain: The game was postponed and rescheduled for tonight, originally an off day for both teams.

* at Dodgers 5, San Francisco 0: Brad Penny gave up four hits over 6 2/3 innings, Jeff Kent hit a two-run homer and Joe Torre won his debut as Dodgers manager.
