Off-duty deputy is shot in alley
An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded Wednesday by an unknown assailant in a Long Beach alley, prompting sheriff’s officials to warn deputies to be on their guard.
The deputy, who was hit in a thigh and is expected to recover fully, told police that his assailant was in a car and called out a slur about “the sheriff” before firing, two law enforcement sources said.
At the time of the shooting, the 36-year-old deputy was wearing civilian clothes.
Investigators are trying to determine how the suspect knew his victim was a sheriff’s deputy, sources said.
