Flames surprise the Sharks, 3-2

Stephane Yelle scored two goals, Miikka Kiprusoff made 37 saves and the Calgary Flames stunned the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, on Wednesday night at San Jose in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff series.

Dion Phaneuf also scored a power-play goal for the Flames.

Ryane Clowe scored two goals as San Jose outshot Calgary, 39-23, but the Flames generated three scores in the first 40 minutes and then held on after Clowe’s second score with 56 seconds to play.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 20 shots for the Sharks, who hadn’t lost a home game in regulation since Feb. 14.

The Flames took a 3-1 in the second period when Jarome Iginla stole the puck from a flat-footed Brian Campbell and broke away down the right side. Yelle knocked home the rebound as Iginla knocked the net off the moorings, and the goal was upheld after an extensive video review.

Colorado 3, Minnesota 2 -- Joe Sakic tipped in a shot by Ruslan Salei from the point midway through the first overtime period, his eighth career playoff goal in extra time, to send the Avalanche past the Wild at St. Paul, Minn.

Kurt Sauer, who scored only once this season, got the first goal for Colorado. Ryan Smyth followed with a power-play deflection, and the Avalanche was up, 2-0, in the second period with only seven shots on net at that point.

The Wild surged back after the second intermission. Mikko Koivu, with help from Avalanche defenseman Chris Finger’s skate, and Todd Fedoruk had goals to tie it -- and offset the loss of Mark Parrish to what the team called a head injury in the second period.

Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 0 -- Gary Roberts and Petr Sykora scored in the first period and the Penguins rode Marc-Andre Fleury’s goaltending after that to a victory at Pittsburgh.

Roberts had two goals, only one fewer than he had during an injury-interrupted season, and Evgeni Malkin -- the NHL’s No. 2 scorer -- had a goal and two assists. The Penguins have won their last nine home games.

Fleury made 26 saves in his first career playoff shutout, improving to 11-2-1 since returning Feb. 28 from a nearly three-month layoff with a badly sprained ankle.

New York Rangers 4, New Jersey 1 -- Scott Gomez assisted on three of the Rangers’ goals at Newark, N.J.

Ryan Callahan, Brendan Shanahan, Sean Avery and Nigel Dawes scored for the Rangers.
