Perez, Mets too tough for Phillies
PHILADELPHIA -- Jimmy Rollins watched most of the game from the top step of the dugout, cheered on his teammates and got a chance to pinch-hit in an important spot.
But the Philadelphia Phillies need more than a cameo from the 2007 National League MVP to beat the New York Mets.
Oliver Perez pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, Jose Reyes hit a two-run homer and the Mets defeated the Phillies, 4-2, Saturday.
The Mets won their fourth in a row against Philadelphia. Each of New York’s wins has come without Rollins in the Phillies’ lineup because of a sprained left ankle.
Without Rollins sparking things at the top, an offense that led the league in runs the last two years has sputtered.
He grounded out against Duaner Sanchez in the sixth inning, stranding two runners.
“Our pitching has been good enough for us to have a winning record,” Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel said. “We need to start hitting.”
