A Marine spokesman said an alleged scrap metal thief at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center was injured after a Marine opened fire on the vehicle the suspect was riding in as it fled the base.

Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Cox said Thursday that the Marine appears to have tried to disable the vehicle by shooting at it. Cox says the passenger was injured Tuesday by metal.

The news came a day after the Marine Corps reported the man was found injured on the base after apparently falling out of a fleeing vehicle.

Cox said two Marines, including the one who fired the shots, have been relieved of duty pending an investigation.
