Sony delays James Bond film release by a week
Sony Corp. on Thursday moved the release of the new James Bond film back a week to Nov. 14, after Time Warner Inc.’s decision to delay the next Harry Potter film until July.
The later date will move “Quantum of Solace,” the second Bond film starring Daniel Craig, closer to the holiday season, Sony said in an e-mailed statement. The film originally was scheduled to reach theaters Nov. 7.
Studios are changing release dates after the strike by Hollywood writers delayed production of some films. Warner Bros. said last week it was moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to July 17 from Nov. 21 to fill gaps in its schedule as a result of the strike.
In “Quantum of Solace,” Bond searches for those responsible for the death of his lover, Vesper Lynd. The film, co-produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., also stars Judi Dench and Olga Kurylenko.
“Casino Royale,” the first Bond film to star Craig, had worldwide ticket sales of $594.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Other films scheduled for Nov. 14 include 20th Century Fox’s “Australia,” starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, and MGM’s comedy “Soul Men,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac.
U.S.-traded Sony shares rose 10 cents to $37.76 on Thursday.
