A 37-year-old mother was killed by gunfire from a passing car and her daughter and stepdaughter wounded Sunday evening as she was driving her family home in South Los Angeles, police said.

Stephanie Smith, 37, was in her car with her 13-year-old daughter, 15-year-old stepdaughter and 21-year-old son when the vehicle came under fire about 8:30 p.m. in the 500 block of West 102nd Street.

According to Los Angeles Police Department detectives, Smith and her family were near their home when a vehicle that was behind them passed her car on the driver’s side. As it went by, someone in the car fired multiple shots at Smith and her passengers, striking her and the two girls. The gunman’s vehicle then fled east.
