It is always a pleasure to read Kurt Streeter’s Minority Report. Last week he was crying because Ty Willingham, who quit a great job at Stanford, was fired for losing 14 straight games at Washington. Now it is poor DeWayne Walker at UCLA. DeWayne is a nice gentleman and an excellent coach, but UCLA has a 17-21 record during the last three years.

The lack of offense is not his fault, but who can forget his defense holding BYU to only 59 points this year or allowing Fresno State to score 36 points at home and beat us, or even worse, losing to Notre Dame last year with less than two minutes left? In the last three years his defense has gotten worse, giving up 259 points in 2006, 307 points in 2007 and 348 in 2008.

Streeter finds fault that two USC assistants, Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, were recently plucked up to be head coaches, suggesting that they got the jobs because they are white. How about this: They got the jobs because they are excellent coaches and have been part of a program that has been a consistent winner and national contender for the better part of this decade.

Our country today looks for the best person for the job and is not (happily most of the time) race-based. Who knows, maybe someday a black person might even get elected president.

Kurt Streeter is right about white assistant coaches getting the nod for head-coaching jobs over their black counterparts. The Washington Huskies didn’t even bother to interview DeWayne Walker, even though it’s obvious that defense should take priority in rebuilding their football program. Walker’s proven mastery of defense would keep Washington in a lot more games while they recruit better talent on both sides of the ball.

It’s always nice to have new UCLA reporters become so knowledgeable that they can advise UCLA to develop a “football” culture akin to USC’s. I wonder, had Kurt Streeter been around in the ‘90s, if he would have given the same advice to USC when UCLA won eight consecutive games.

So Pete Carroll recommended DeWayne Walker for the San Diego State head-coaching job.

I’m sure that there are a lot of Bruins alumni who would do the same for Carroll for any NFL head-coach opening.
