A woman driving relatives to a holiday gathering in the San Diego area on Christmas morning lost control of her van, which overturned on the 110 Freeway in Wilmington, the California Highway Patrol said. The driver and a passenger were killed.

Sheryl Thacker, 38, of San Pedro was driving north on the freeway when the accident occurred just south of Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the CHP.

It was not immediately clear how Thacker lost control of the vehicle, which veered across three lanes of traffic and hit the guardrail on the right shoulder, the CHP said. The force of the impact flipped the vehicle, which landed on its roof.

Thacker and the front-seat passenger, identified as Carmela Rodriguez, 64, from San Pedro, were pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

Thacker’s 12-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries when she was ejected from the vehicle, the CHP said. Two other passengers, both men, were transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. None of the van’s occupants were wearing seat belts, the CHP said.
