Loyola Marymount gets past San Francisco, 72-67

Loyola Marymount defeated San Francisco, 72-67, on Monday at Los Angeles, sending Coach Eddie Sutton’s team to defeat the game after a huge comeback earned him his 800th victory.

Shawn Deadwiler scored 18 points for the Lions, 5-18 overall and 2-5 in the West Coast Conference. The Lions ended a four-game losing streak.

Earlier in the day, Sutton became the winningest active coach in major men’s college basketball with the resignation of Bob Knight from Texas Tech.

The Dons (6-16, 2-5) have lost eight of 10 games since Sutton arrived to take over for Jessie Evans late last year. They have lost 11 of 14 road games this season.

Deadwiler went four for nine from three-point range and also had seven rebounds. He made a three-pointer to finish an 11-0 run that opened the second half and gave Loyola Marymount a 48-37 lead with 15:03 remaining.

San Diego 61, Pepperdine 58 -- De’Jon Jackson scored 20 points and San Diego held off a second-half charge from Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference game at Malibu.

Rob Jones had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Toreros (13-11, 6-1), who won their fifth straight game.

Freshman Malcolm Thomas had 18 points, 15 rebounds, six blocked shots and four assists for Pepperdine (7-16, 1-6). It was his fifth double-double of the season. Freshman Tyrone Shelley added 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Waves trailed by 13 at halftime, but fought back to within a point late in the second half.
