Peterson, Owens lead NFC, 42-30

Adrian Peterson finished his rookie season by running for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and Terrell Owens made up for early drops with two touchdown catches in the NFC’s 42-30 victory over the AFC on Sunday in Honolulu.

Peterson’s most-valuable-player effort was the first of more than 100 yards since Marshall Faulk had 180 and Chris Warren had 127 in 1995. The Minnesota running back joined Faulk as the only rookies to be voted MVP of the Pro Bowl.

Owens finished with eight catches for 101 yards.

Fischbacher, Suter share super-G title

Austria’s Andrea Fischbacher and Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter shared a victory in a super-G in Sestriere, Italy.

It was the first World Cup victory for the racers, who finished in 1 minute 21.06 seconds.

Lindsey Vonn finished 16th and dropped into a tie for the overall World Cup lead with Austrian Nicole Hosp, who placed 14th. Julia Mancuso was the top American finisher in eighth place.

Austrian Maria Holaus was airlifted to a hospital because of a head injury after falling.

Russia advances after Djokovic retires

Russia took advantage of an ailing Novak Djokovic to reach the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. Germany and Sweden also advanced.

The Russians earned the decisive point in the 3-2 win over Serbia when flu-ridden Djokovic withdrew from the first reverse singles match despite leading Nikolay Davydenko, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6.

Anna Chakvetadze won her seventh title by beating Agnes Szavay, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the final of the Open Gaz de France in Paris. . . . Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska won her second career title, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (4), over Jill Craybas in the Pattaya Open final in Thailand.

Sweeney, Dodgers close in on a deal

Pinch-hitting specialist Mark Sweeney is close to re-signing with the Dodgers, according to his agent, Barry Axelrod. Sweeney, 38, and the Dodgers are discussing a one-year non-guaranteed contract similar to the deal that right-hander Rudy Seanez signed with the club last week. .
