Man is charged with hate crime
A self-proclaimed white supremacist has been charged with a hate crime for allegedly attacking an African American security guard outside a restaurant at the Irvine Spectrum, authorities said Wednesday.
Ryan Lawrence Monfils, 20, arrested Tuesday at a McDonald’s restaurant in Orange where he is a cashier, is accused of yelling racial slurs, repeatedly punching the uniformed guard and throwing a lighted cigarette in his face about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2.
The guard, whose name was not released, was on duty outside Dave & Buster’s when the alleged attack occurred. If convicted, Monfils, of Stanton, could face up to three years in state prison.
He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned today.
