Beginning Sunday, about 45,000 residents in the Antelope Valley will have limited water supply for a week because of system upgrades, officials at Los Angeles County’s Waterworks Districts said Thursday.

The reduction in water will affect the agency’s District 40 customers in Lancaster and western Palmdale, who are served by the Quartz Hill Water Treatment Plant.

The plant will be completely shut down from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. March 1 for the second phase of plant expansion, said Melinda Barrett, a spokeswoman for Waterworks Districts. Phase one was conducted last October, when residents cut water usage by 35%, water officials said.

Customers are again being asked to adopt water-saving measures during the treatment plant shutdown. Residents should generally avoiding using water -- including watering lawns -- during the peak demand periods of 6 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., officials said.

“We’re hoping people can do as they did in October . . . so we can avoid running out of water,” Barrett said.

Completion of the expansion would increase the daily water supply from 70 million gallons to about 95 million gallons, Barrett said.
