at Buffalo 8, Nashville 4: Steve Bernier scored twice and had an assist in his Sabres’ debut. Ryan Miller stopped 24 shots to earn his 29th victory despite sitting out eight minutes of the second period after having his nose bloodied by Marek Zidlicky’s shot that hit him on the mask.

Colorado 3, at Vancouver 2 (SO): Avalanche captain Joe Sakic tied the score with 14.7 seconds left in regulation and Marek Svatos scored the winning goal in the shootout, lifting Colorado into a tie with Nashville for eighth-place in the Western Conference.

San Jose 4, at Columbus 2: Brian Campbell earned his first point for the Sharks, who scored three goals in an eight-minute span of the second period. Joe Pavelski had a goal and an assist and Jonathan Cheechoo, Torrey Mitchell and Jeremy Roenick also scored for the Sharks.

Toronto 4, at Florida 3 (SO): Mats Sundin’s second goal with 1:08 left in regulation forced overtime and the Maple Leafs went on to a shootout victory. Tomas Kaberle scored the only goal of the shootout, and Toronto’s Vesa Toskala sealed the victory when he blocked Olli Jokinen’s wrist shot.

Minnesota 3, at Tampa Bay 2: Pierre-Marc Bouchard had two assists to lead the Wild past the Lightning. Todd Fedoruk, Pavol Demitra and Brian Rolston scored the goals for the Wild, which ended a four-game losing streak. The last-place Lightning has lost five in a row.

at Chicago 1, Phoenix 0: Patrick Lalime made 32 saves for his first shutout in more than a year, and Jason Williams scored the lone goal for the Blackhawks. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 24 shots for Phoenix, making several tough saves early before Williams scored 7:58 into the game.
