San Luis still perfect after win over Pumas

HOUSTON -- San Luis scored twice in the first half and posted its second straight shutout for a 2-0 victory over Pumas in the second round of Group B play in the InterLiga tournament Saturday night at the University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium.

In Saturday’s first match, Edgar Andrade scored early in the first half and Cruz Azul held on for a 1-0 victory over Monterrey.

San Luis (2-0) is the only team in Group B that is unbeaten entering the third round of group play.

The top two teams from Groups A and B will advance to the finals Saturday at the Home Depot Center.

In the ninth minute of the nightcap, San Luis forward Tressor Moreno dribbled half the field and kicked it in from 10 yards on the right side for a 1-0 lead.

San Luis made it 2-0 when Alfredo Moreno took a crossing pass from Mario Perez and scored from close range in the 36th minute.

In the first game, Cruz Azul scored in the 19th minute when Andrade took a pass from Cesar Villaluz on a breakaway up the middle and banged it in from 20 yards.

San Luis will play Monterrey, and Pumas will face Cruz Azul on Tuesday in the final group-stage matches at the Home Depot Center. Monterrey, which hasn’t scored in two InterLiga matches, has been eliminated from contention.

Today there are two Group A games to be played at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

Group leader Club America, will try to strengthen its hold on first place when it takes on Toluca, which tied Atlas in its first game. America defeated Morelia, 1-0, in its first game.

The second Group A game will pit Atlas and Morelia with the loser likely being eliminated from contention.

The final Group A games are Wednesday at the Home Depot Center.
