Oregon stops California, 79-70
California slowed Oregon’s league-leading offensive attack. But only for a half.
Malik Hairston and Bryce Taylor scored 20 points apiece and the Ducks held off the Golden Bears, 79-70, Thursday night at Eugene, Ore.
Oregon’s Maarty Leunen had 18 points and 11 rebounds for his Pacific 10 Conference-leading 10th double-double of the season.
The Ducks (11-4, 2-1) led, 31-26, at halftime, but scored 48 points in the second half -- once they discovered a way to break through Cal’s zone defense.
“We did a much better job of attacking their zone” in the second half, Oregon Coach Ernie Kent said. “We pounded it in a little more and got into a rhythm.”
Ryan Anderson, the leading scorer in the Pac-10, scored 22 points and Patrick Christopher had 21 for the Golden Bears (10-4, 1-2), who were playing their first road game since Dec. 9.
No. 23 Stanford 66, Oregon State 46 -- The Cardinal (13-2, 2-1) had no problem at Palo Alto in beating the Beavers (6-9, 0-3) for the 16th time in the last 17 meetings.
Lawrence Hill had 13 points and Brook Lopez had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Stanford. Anthony Goods added 12 points for the Cardinal.
Freshman Omari Johnson scored 11 points but was only four of 14 from the field for the Beavers, who had a season-low point total and shot 30.4%.
Stanford is among the top 10 in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 56.8 points.
