Marine guilty in weapons case

Share

A Marine sergeant Monday pleaded guilty in federal court to having an unauthorized fully-automatic AK47 that he brought home from Iraq.

Under a plea bargain, Sgt. Leonardo San Juan Jr., 31, of El Paso will pay a $100 fine and prosecutors will not recommend a jail sentence, although the judge is not bound by the agreement.

San Juan is to be sentenced in August.

To bring an enemy weapon back from Iraq, military personnel need authorization from their superiors. San Juan entered his plea on the eve of trial; under federal law, he could face 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
