Stanford eliminates Pepperdine

Sean Ratliff hit two home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth inning, and the host Cardinal overcame an early four-run deficit to beat Pepperdine, 9-7, on Monday and win the Stanford regional.

Jason Castro hit a key two-run double for the Cardinal (37-22), which won four consecutive elimination games after losing its opener to UC Davis on Friday to advance to a super regional against Cal State Fullerton.

Chase d’Arnaud had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in four runs for the Waves (38-21), who lost their third straight regional championship and missed advancing for the first time since winning the 1992 national title.

Drew Storen (4-3) pitched four innings in relief of starter Erik Davis to earn his second win of the regional. Storen gave up two runs and three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Davis, working on two days’ rest, gave up five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Tyler Hess (4-1), who walked a batter ahead of Ratliffe’s slam, took the loss. Starter Robert Dickmann gave up three runs and five hits in four innings. He left the game with the lead.

The Waves scored four runs in the first on d’Arnaud’s three-run homer and Matt Aidem’s double.

Toby Gerhart and Ratliff each drove in a run in the third and fourth, and Nate Simon and Matt Harris responded in kind for the Waves.

Walks to Jake Schlander and Cord Phelps to open the fifth ended Dickmann’s day. Scott Alexander came out after walking Randy Molina to load the bases.

Fresno State 5, San Diego 1 -- Gavin Hedstrom had three hits to help the Bulldogs win the Long Beach regional.

Fresno State (40-28), the Western Athletic Conference champion, will play Arizona State in the first super regional in school history next weekend.

San Diego (44-17) was ranked sixth in the nation.

Holden Sprague (4-2) gave up one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings for Fresno State. Brandon Burke came on in relief and earned his 11th save of the season.

Hedstrom hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth off Sammy Solis (3-2) to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

Texas A&M; 13, Houston 5 -- Kyle Colligan hit two home runs to lead the host Aggies (46-17) to the regional title and a game against Rice in the weekend’s super regional.

Rice (45-13) beat A&M; in last year’s super regional, taking two games from the Aggies.

Georgia 18, Georgia Tech 6 -- Matt Olson went five for six with three RBIs and Rich Poythress hit a two-run homer to help host Georgia advance to a super regional, where the Bulldogs (39-22-1) will host North Carolina State.

Georgia Tech (41-21) ended a tough year that included the heroin-related death of pitcher Michael Hutts on April 11.

Florida State 16, Tulane 7 -- Tyler Holt went five for six and Dennis Guinn capped a six-run fourth inning with a three-run double to help the host Seminoles eliminate the Green Wave (39-22-1) and advance to a super regional for the first time since 2005.

It was the 19th time Florida State (52-11) won its region, though the Seminoles had to win four straight elimination games to do it after opening the tournament with a loss to Bucknell.
