* Cleveland 8, at Detroit 2: Ryan Garko and Kelly Shoppach homered in the first two innings against Dontrelle Willis to help the Indians build an 8-0 lead. The Indians kept Cliff Lee on the mound after a 57-minute rain delay in the fifth, and he became the American League’s first 10-game winner. Lee (10-1) gave up two runs, six hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings.

* Seattle 3, at Toronto 2 (10 innings): Miguel Cairo’s safety squeeze after Jason Frasor walked the bases loaded in the 10th inning lifted the Mariners. Frasor (1-1) walked Raul Ibanez leading off the 10th. Pinch-runner Willie Bloomquist stole second and Adrian Beltre struck out. Frasor then intentionally walked Jose Lopez and walked Wladimir Balentien to load the bases. Before the game, Seattle fired hitting coach Jeff Pentland and replaced him with Lee Elia, who had been serving as a consultant.

* Kansas City 3, at New York 2: Jose Guillen hit a tiebreaking solo home run against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning. Guillen went deep on an 0-and-2 pitch from Rivera (2-2), pumping his right arm as he watched the ball sail over the fence while rounding first base. Rivera turned around and shouted several times after the drive -- a rare show of emotion for the longtime closer.
