UC system’s No. 2 official resigns

On the day a new UC system president took office, the second-in-command of the 10-campus university resigned. Wyatt R. Hume, UC provost and executive vice president for academic and health affairs, said Monday he will leave his position by September but has no specific future plans.

Hume’s move came as Mark G. Yudof, former chancellor of the University of Texas system, formally became president of the University of California system. Hume, 63, a former UCLA administrator, also had served since August as the UC system’s chief operating officer. Born in Australia and trained in dentistry, Hume was president of the University of New South Wales from 2002 to 2004.

Yudof said he accepted Hume’s decision with regret. Hume “has performed a great service for the UC system, taking on a series of difficult assignments and moving the institution forward during the recent transition period,” he said in a statement.
