Top-seeded Miami ousted by Stanford from CWS

Sean Ratliff homered and Cord Phelps tripled in Stanford’s four-run fifth inning, and the Cardinal ousted top-seeded Miami from the College World Series with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night at Omaha.

The Cardinal (41-23-2) advanced to the Bracket 1 finals against Georgia, needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to return to the best-of-three championship round for the second time since 2003.

Miami finished 53-11.

Raiders expect Walker to be ready for camp

After speaking to Javon Walker by phone, Oakland Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin expected the wide receiver to be ready for training camp when he recovers from a concussion and facial injuries incurred during a robbery last weekend in Las Vegas. Walker, 29, was released from the hospital.

Arizona Cardinals running back J.J. Arrington, 25, was charged with disorderly conduct after a fight at a nightclub in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Federer, Ivanovic are No. 1 at Wimbledon

Five-time champion Roger Federer and top-ranked Ana Ivanovic were seeded No. 1 for next week’s Wimbledon.

Federer is followed by Rafael Nadal, a finalist the last two years, and Novak Djokovic, the Australian Open champion. Two-time finalist Andy Roddick was seeded sixth and James Blake was ninth.

Jelena Jankovic was seeded second and former champion Maria Sharapova was third. Two-time champion Serena Williams was seeded sixth and defending champion and four-time winner Venus Williams was seeded seventh.

Defending champion Ivo Karlovic defeated Sam Querrey, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (14), to reach the quarterfinals of the Nottingham Open in England.

Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset, 6-2, 6-2, by Caroline Wozniacki in the second round of the Eastbourne International in England.

Defending champion Ivan Ljubicic was upset, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (5), by Viktor Troicki in the second round of the Ordina Open at Den Bosch, Netherlands.

The ATP’s season-ending championship will relocate from Shanghai to London’s O2 Arena in 2009 in a five-year deal. Its name will also change from the Tennis Masters Cup to the ATP World Tour Finals.

Game 6 is best-rated since the 2000 Finals

The Lakers’ Tuesday night elimination by the Boston Celtics on ABC was the highest-rated and most-viewed NBA Finals Game 6 since 2000, when the Lakers clinched the title against the Indiana Pacers.

Tuesday’s Game 6 averaged 16.8 million viewers compared to 22.4 million in 2000.

Boston police said 22 people were arrested during the Celtics’ championship celebration.

SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett testified in Seattle that he misunderstood the political climate and regretted his failure “to intergrate more completely with the people” of Seattle in his second day on the stand in a federal trial over the final two years of the team’s lease at KeyArena.

Toronto bought out the final $4.25-million season on the contract of Jorge Garbajosa, the 31-year-old forward whose career was hampered by a broken leg in March 2007.

Niedermayer decision still expected Friday

Scott Niedermayer was expected to tell the Ducks on Friday, the day of the NHL entry draft, whether he will play next season or retire, his agent said.

As to which way Niedermayer will go, Kevin Epp told Canada-based TSN, “I couldn’t say one way or the other. I think he doesn’t even know some days.”

Qualifying medalists Lizette Salas and Katie Kempter lost their first-round matches in the U. S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, with Azusa’s Salas falling, 2 and 1 to Ellen Mueller and Kempter losing to Tzu Chi Lin in 20 holes in Erin, Wis.

Haley Ishimatsu of Seal Beach trailed 2000 Olympic platform champion Laura Wilkinson after the women’s 10-meter preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic diving trials in Indianapolis. Wilkinson had 362.00 points to Ishimatsu’s 360.70.

Brazil and Argentina tied, 0-0, in a 2010 World Cup soccer qualifying match at Bela Horizonte, Brazil.
