Seven-way tie for lead at LPGA event

Ai Miyazato shot a four-under-par 68 on Thursday to join Cristie Kerr and five South Korean players atop the crowded leaderboard at the Wegmans LPGA in Rochester, N.Y.

Jeong Jang, Inbee Park, Song-Hee Kim, Jimin Jeong and Soo-Yun Kang, who holed a nine-wood shot for an ace on the 165-yard seventh hole, also shot 68s. Morgan Pressel, Becky Lucidi, Helen Alfredsson, Hee-Won Han, Na On Min, Kyeong Bae and Young-A Yang opened with 69s.

Defending champion Lorena Ochoa carded an even-par 72, one better than Annika Sorenstam.

Michelle Wie, who is ranked 200th in the world and received a sponsor exemption, shot a 71.

Johnson Wagner shot a six-under 64 to match Steve Lowery, Brad Adamonis and Brian Davis for the first-round lead at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn. . . . Tiffany Joh, the UCLA standout who won the 2006 tournament, won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Erin, Wis. . . . James Erkenbeck of San Diego ousted defending champion Josh Anderson of Murrieta, 2 and 1, at the California Amateur Championship at Lakeside in Toluca Lake.

Ferrer defeats Ancic in quarterfinals

Top-seeded David Ferrer advanced to the Ordina Open semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over sixth-seeded Mario Ancic at Den Bosch, Netherlands.

Ferrer will play teenager Juan Martin Del Porto in the semifinals. Del Porto served 13 aces and beat Arnaud Clement, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Defending champion Ivo Karlovic defeated Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to advance to the Nottingham Open semifinals in England.

The fourth-seeded Karlovic will play eighth-seeded Gael Monfils, who beat Vincent Spadea, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Second-seeded Marion Bartoli defeated qualifier Alisa Kleybanova, 6-3, 6-3, and reached the semifinals of the Eastbourne International in England. Bartoli had won only eight matches in 14 events entering Eastbourne.

Surfers’ Hall of Fame announces inductees

Big-wave pioneer Mike Parsons joins Brad Gerlach, Sean Collins and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew as 2008 inductees into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame.

They’ll be enshrined at 10 a.m. on July 25 in front of Huntington Surf & Sport on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street in Huntington Beach.

Tickets for the X Games, which will be held July 31-Aug. 3 at Staples Center and the Home Depot Center in Carson, are on sale at venue box offices and through Ticketmaster. They range from $10-$20, depending on location and venue.

Notre Dame, which went 3-9 in football last season and has lost nine bowl games in a row, has signed a new, five-year broadcast agreement with NBC, extending their agreement through 2015.

The Big Ten Network and cable carrier Comcast announced a multiyear agreement for programming that starts Aug. 15 on expanded basic cable in states with Big Ten teams: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Compton Dominguez High’s decorated athletic program has been stripped of any home boys’ or girls’ playoff games for all sports in the 2008-09 school year, a Southern Section official confirmed, because the school was delinquent in delivering the section its boys’ basketball playoff ticket revenue from two home playoff games this year.
