Russia had a U.N. Security Council meeting on the Middle East postponed because it clashed with a European Championship soccer semifinal match between Russia and Spain, said Moscow’s U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin: “Absolutely. Yes, we did.”

Russia is a permanent, veto-holding member of the 15- nation Security Council.

The Middle East meeting, at which the council was to be briefed by the U.N. Secretariat on the latest developments in the region, was rescheduled for today.

Unlike Euro soccer semifinals, such meetings are a monthly fixture.

Russia lost, 0-3.
