Officers killed two men in separate shootings Tuesday in Los Angeles and Covina.

About 12:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers stopped a suspected drunk driver on West 7th Street west of downtown L.A., said Officer Terry Liu, a CHP spokesman. As the driver got out of a Mercedes, he drew a handgun, and officers fired in self-defense, Liu said.

The motorist, who was not immediately identified, died at the scene.

In Covina shortly after 2 a.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers chased a stolen car into an alley north of the 300 block of East Puente Street.

When the driver tried to run over officers, they opened fire, authorities said.

“Fearing for their safety, the deputies and California Highway Patrol together fired rounds -- we don’t how many -- but fatally struck the male suspect,” said Deputy Denise Fuchs of the sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.
